Call for application: GEF-9 Planning Workshop Africa

The GEF-9 Planning Workshop for Africa will take place from 7 to 10 December 2026 in Harare, Zimbabwe.

This regional workshop is organized under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Country Support Programme to enhance understanding of the GEF strategies, policies, and procedures. It will bring together GEF Focal Points, Convention Focal Points, representatives from civil society organizations, GEF Agencies and related stakeholders from across Africa.

It will provide an opportunity for participants to strengthen understanding of GEF-9 priorities, share regional experiences, and enhance collaboration among stakeholders. This is an opportunity for civil society representatives to bring their experiences, priorities, and perspectives from communities and countries across the region into discussions on future GEF programming. Participation can also help strengthen connections among civil society organizations and other stakeholders working on environmental issues across Africa.

The workshop will include participants from the following countries:

Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe

We invite interested members of the GEF CSO Network or civil society organisations that have completed a GEF CSO Network membership application or renewal application (approval is not required at this stage) from the above-mentioned countries. Organizations must have been legally registered for at least three (3) years and have experience in implementing or participating in GEF-funded projects, including SGP, SCCF, LDCF, or GBFF.

Application for GEF -9 Planning workshop in Zimbabwe, 7 to 10 December 2026

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is organizing GEF-9 Planning workshop in Harare, Zimbabwe from 7 to 10 December 2026.

The workshop will provide an opportunity for CSOs to engage in the GEF-9 planning process, exchange experiences and perspectives, and strengthen their understanding of emerging priorities and opportunities for civil society engagement in GEF programming.

Funding

Selected delegates who require financial support, will be fully funded, including:

  • International airfare
  • Accommodation

To be considered for non funded seats, please select that you do not require funding to join.

Eligible Countries

Applications are invited from CSOs based in the following countries:

Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a national, long term resident, or an employee of an organization in the eligible countries, and
  • Either
    • be a member of the GEF CSO Network; or
    • Have implemented or participated in a GEF-funded project (including GEF Small Grants Programme, Inclusive Conservation Initiative, SCCF, LDCF, or GBFF projects).

If the organization is not yet a CSO Network member, membership application is required as part of the nomination.

Selection Considerations

In line with GEF and GEF CSO network guidance, nominations will consider:

  • Familiarity with GEF processes and programming
  • Prior engagement with GEF projects or intergovernmental processes
  • Gender balance
  • Intergenerational representation
  • Representation of Indigenous Peoples and local communities

While we aim to support one CSO Network delegate per country, final selection will depend on the overall number and quality of nominations received across stakeholder groups.
